What is HRA?
HRA, or house rent allowance, is the part of salary meant for rent. If you pay rent, part of it is tax-free under the old tax regime, worked out as the lowest of three amounts.

Common questions
Which cities get 50% HRA exemption?
From FY 2026-27: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad. Other cities use 40%.
Can I claim HRA in the new regime?
No. HRA exemption is only in the old regime.
